Libya’s one-time justice minister, who recently stepped down, is claiming to have proof that Colonel Gaddafi ordered the Lockerbie bombings. (Or at least that’s what the Swedish rag Expressen has alleged.) He might, of course, but it’s worth noting that we haven’t read the interview (well, unless you’re sharp enough to know Swedish), that he’s given no details regarding this “proof” and that we only have it on his word that it exists at all. While his sincerity might be absolute he’s not the first to say he holds the key to this mysterious affair and as yet none of them have fitted. Still, it should encourage calls to have the dodgy dictator arrested. I’m all for it: if we can’t have an inquiry into the conviction we might as well take any chance to see its claims interrogated. And if there’s new evidence I’d love to see it tested; after all, we’ve seen precious little since the tragedy.

One word of caution? ‘Curveball’.

Heh: true. It’s also odd how shocked – shocked – people seem to be about the notion that Gaddafi ordered it. If it was Megrahi – and I don’t deny that it’s quite possible – who else would have devised it? Intelligence agents don’t just blow up planes on fleeting whims.
